How to Choose a Tent?

by cody lewis

Camping can be a lot of fun. Whether you're on backpacking with your family, spouse, or friends, a high-quality tent is a must-have if you want to enjoy your camping trip. However, among many options available in the market, choosing the right tent can be tricky.

You should consider many things, such as materials, the number of people sleeping inside, the weather, and many other things.

Before choosing a tent, let’s know some key factors you must consider below:

Things to Consider Before Choosing a Tent

Here, we are discussing some useful tips on how you can choose a tent before you buy a tent.

Number of People Using

Choose a tent based on the size of your group. If you have a family of four, go for a six-person tent. If you ride along, a two-person tent will be enough. However, keep in mind that no industry standard specifies the size of a tent for each individual.

Use of Space

When you buy a tent, think about how many people will accommodate in the tent, how many days you will use it and how you will use the space with your belongings.

For each person, at least 30 square feet of space is recommended. Always try to get a tent for one extra person. Keep in mind that you have to keep all of your things inside your tent. Do not buy big tents as it will be difficult to carry long distances.

Size of the Tent

If you want headroom in your tent, go for a dome-shaped tent. As they provide a lot of space, more people can sleep in the tent.

Otherwise, buy an A-frame tent which will help you to save money. The major problem with these tents is they have limited space and are easily affected by harsh weather.

For stability, you can select a geodesic tent. When setting up, they create triangles that will give you enough space and benefit to camp in winter.

Tents Seasonality

Choose between the varieties of the tent as follows:

3-Season Tents

The most popular tents are 3-season tents. They are usually lightweight and durable. These tents are designed to handle fall, spring, and summer weather.

But for bad weather conditions, it is better to avoid them. They offer a good source of ventilation and keep you warm.

4-Season Tents

These tents are used mainly in the winter season. They stand firm against heavy snowfall and high winds. The walls are constructed heavily to retain heat in the tent.

They have rounded dome designs. It has more poles and higher fabrics that help to maintain safety in cold weather.

Family Size Tent

If you want to camp with your family, you can pick a family-size tent. These tents have multiple rooms, which provide a lot of space and comfort.

Though these tents cost you a lot, everything fails under your needs. Also, try to have enough sleeping bags, mats, and gear so you can use them when needed.

Weight of the Tent

The weight of the tent is a major issue to keep in mind. If you use a family-size tent, be alert as they are heavy to carry. They also require a lot of time to set up. The same goes for 4-season tents.

So, before purchasing, always think about where you need to invest. But if you plan on car camping, weight is not an issue. Before choosing, plan and decide which camping will suit you and which tent you want to buy according to location and weather conditions.

Easy to Use

Everyone wants to spend their time wisely. While purchasing, remember how much time you will need to set up the tent. Find a tent in which you are interested and watch a video on how to use it.

Features of the Tent

Before buying a tent, look for the following features:

Height

If you want to stand up straight inside your tent, you need to look for a tall height tent.  If you want more space and height, you can choose cabin-style tents.

On the other hand, if you need super strength and abilities, you need dome-style tents. They stand tall, but due to sloppy walls, they reduce some space.

Tent Doors and Windows

While choosing tents, you must consider how many doors you need based on size and shape. If you camp with family, you must think of multiple doors.

Also, consider how easily you can open and close your doors. YKK zippers are much better in this criterion.

Also, keep in mind how many numbers of windows you need for proper ventilation. Additional doors and windows will increase the size and shape of the tent.

Tent Poles

To pitch a tent, it depends on how you configure your poles. Fewer poles typically allow for quicker setups.

Many tents use clips and short pole sleeves to balance strength, ventilation, and convenience of setup. You can use aluminum poles which are stronger and more durable.

Storage of Pockets

You can store handlamps, sunglass, and other gear inside your tent if you have enough pockets. Most tents come up with two to three pockets. As a result, you can keep track of your items.

Rainfly

A rainfly is a waterproof cover to fit above your roof. It protects your tent from rain and snow. The roof type gives light and views, whereas the full type gives maximum cover from wind and rain.

Conclusion

Spending on your first tent is an amazing experience. This is a guide for you so that when you visit a store, you can think and decide which tent is right for you.

Don't become excited by seeing a lot of options. Try to buy which one suits you rather than spending on a luxurious one. Shop around and compare tents so that it fits your budget.
