Why I Need an Electrical Hook up for Camping in My Tent?

Why I Need an Electrical Hook up for Camping in My Tent?

by cody lewis

Do I need an electrical connection for camping in my tent? No. That said, it can be useful to heat up your bed, charge electric devices like mobiles, and laptops, or use them as a source for other electric devices.

Camping can be a wonderful opportunity for anyone of any age or background to get away from it all, enjoy the serenity of nature, and clear their minds of the stresses and headaches of everyday life.

The great thing about tents is that they are quick, easy, and not terribly expensive. At many campgrounds, it is possible to bring power to your tent with ease.

Moreover, these days various camping appliances are there to make your camping experience more comfortable and convenient. As a result, camping is not a hobby for single people anymore. Instead, one can enjoy it with family.

There are several benefits of having an electrical hook up in your tent or camper, but first, let’s define what one actually is. An electrical hookup connects directly to the power source of the campsite where you are staying and into your tent.

What are the Uses of an Electric Hookup?

When we are out in the woods, a campsite electrical hookup will make sure we feel at home. That is, you will not miss the basic comforts of your home while you have a campsite electrical hookup.

There are many advantages of having electricity while camping. As you plan your next trip, whether near or far from home, remember that it can be a very enjoyable experience if you have access to all of the comforts of home.

Here I have made a list of essential activities that are easier for a campsite hooking.

  • Tent Heater: Usually, the suitable destinations for camping get cold during the evening. If you want to get a warm feeling, an electric hookup will efficiently run the tent heater.
  • Tent Fan: During the nights, camps can get hot and stuffy. A tent fan would be handy, and an electric hookup will help you to operate it.
  • Cooler and Refrigerator: Carrying a cooler or refrigerator during camping is very common. They help the campers to keep food fresh. However, keeping that cooler and refrigerator in action might get tricky. Again, an electric hookup will save your day.
  • Emergency Medical Appliances: People with asthma and other breathing difficulties carry their nebulizers everywhere. For them, the electricity system must be uninterrupted. And an electric hookup makes sure of it.
  • Blow Dryer: None of us want to get sick while we are out there for adventure. However, leaving our hair wet after a shower may lead to catching a cold. As a result, carrying a blow dryer is necessary and making it run is too.

From the above list, you can figure that a campsite electrical hookup will make sure you have a comfortable camping experience.

However, you will have to decide on carrying an electric hookup from ahead. That is because with it you will have to make some arrangements for running it. Now let us discuss how you will use electric hookups safely.

Are You Worried about Electric Appliances?

Often people are scared about having electricity in their camps. While the tension is legit, with proper precautions, you can avoid accidents.

If you are not in a vehicle, make sure your campground is aware of your demands.

Besides, never forget to follow the manual of the electrical appliances that you are carrying for your camping. If you follow the instructions word by word, there is little or no possibility of a malfunction.

What is a Campsite Electrical Hookup?

If you have chosen a public camping spot, there is a high probability that you will get an electrical hookup. Now how much load that given hookup can bear has no guarantee. Again, whether you have chosen a recreational vehicle or a single tent for your camping will also affect the quality of given electrical hookups as well.

Remember, these hookups are there to ensure the basic comforts only; you cannot expect them to function as the ones at your home. However, they are good enough to continue your day-to-day tasks like blow-drying and water heating.

Electrical hookup for camping

Guideline for Setup Campsite Electrical Hookup

You will have these hookups close to your tent or RV on a wooden slot in your camping map. They look very similar to the plug points we have at our homes. However, you cannot just plug in any standard plugs.

Remember, the pin and the outlet should match. Besides, the plug should not give away more current than the electric hookup can take. Usually, the electric hookups in the campsites are suitable for thirty to fifty amperes of electricity. You may use a plug that gives away extra fifteen to twenty volts but not more than that.

This is why, when you will let your campsite know about your electrical hookup requirement, they will send you a guideline of what you can carry and what not. Follow that, and you will not face any trouble.

Besides safety reasons, following the guideline will ensure that you are not using up all the electricity alone. You may use up all the electricity, and then other campers on the site will face the consequences. They will not get any when they need it.

Thus, we can say that an electrical hookup for camping is just like the socket board or electrical outlets we have at home, just with lower capacity. These hookups are on the wooden slats, and you need to connect your electrical appliances to these hookups.

To be precise, electrical hookups at camping are the source of electricity at your campsite. Therefore, I would say anyone planning on going camping soon should get an electric hookup or book one at the site.

Is It Possible to Go on Camping without an Electrical Hookup?

Many might argue that we choose camping to get away from our day-to-day hassles, so why take electricity with us? While many might say this, there is no such rule that you cannot enjoy nature while having the blessings of technology with you. Besides, our lifestyle makes it next to impossible to survive without any source of electricity.

Charging your gadgets:

We depend on our laptops and mobile phones for all sorts of activities these days, and we stay connected with their help. It is pretty impossible to stay disconnected from the whole world for so many days. Thus, to keep your gadgets active, you will need to charge them; and you will need electricity.

Ensures essential comfort:

We all have that one person in our group who hates camping. However, that every person wants to enjoy nature as well. Electrical Hookup is a suitable solution for these people. Usually, people avoid camping because they do not want to stay without the city amenities. However, an electrical hookup solves all the problems. What else will anyone need if they can get hot and cold water, stored food, a fan, heater as their wish?

Hence, the answer to the main question is, No! You can go however you like, but you cannot enjoy the camping experience without an electric hookup. So everyone should carry or make sure that the campsite already has an electric hookup.

What are the Bumps You will Have to Face If You are Using an Electric Hookup?

If you are planning on using the campsite’s electric hookup, you will face more bumps. For instance, the electric hookups in camps are mainly for camp vehicles.

Of course, the tent campers can use them too, but their usage limit is meager. As a result, a tent camper might sometimes use up the resources of others.

Again, some vehicle campers might be extra mean. Often, tent campers face aggressive behavior from the vehicle campers while they want to use the hookups. These situations may affect your camping experience. Nevertheless, we go out camping for a pleasant experience.

How to realize whether a campsite has its electrical hookup or not?

As I have mentioned before, you will have to plan that because you will have to look up it. When you are planning camping, call the site and check if it has an electric hookup facility. If it does not have an electrical hookup, but you need or want one, there are ways you can have it.

How to Buy an Electrical Hookup for Camping?

Having access to electricity is essential while camping. If the campsite does not have an electrical hookup facility, you can have it on your own.

Look Out for the Amp Ratings

The unit of electrical current is an amp. For instance, a blow dryer requires six and a half amps or an electrical current. Usually, the hookups have the capacity of six amps to sixteen amps. So buy the one according to your needs. And remember, you have to calculate while using the hookup. Therefore, it is better not to use too many electrical appliances at the same time.

Look Out for the Cables and Their Lengths

An ideal cable is twenty-five meters long. So go for the one with the cables of that length. These hookups have a male socket and a female socket. Now, connect the male socket on the power bollard and the female socket on the mobile mains.

Look for IP44 Ratings

IP44 rating is the label that ensures that your hookup is a standard one. In addition, this label will work as a guarantee that your hookup has effective sealing against the interference of dirt and moisture. Having this rating is necessary to avoid any unpleasant circumstances.

What are Some Other Familiar Sources of Electricity While You are Camping?

A passionate camper deserves every ease during his adventure. Besides, these days camping is a popular family activity these days.  We all know while traveling with families, we cannot compromise a few things. Among them, the comfort of electricity is one. That is why you should ensure an uninterrupted flow of electricity before going camping. To help you ensure that we are here with the list of sources of electricity while camping.

Portable Generators:

The choice is widespread among campers these days. If you can make sure that your generator is not very noisy, nothing can stop you from enjoying uninterrupted facilities of electricity. However, pick your product carefully. That is because generators have limitations in power supply too. Besides, they are expensive. That is why you will have to make your purchase very carefully.

If you can choose an ideal generator, your camoing experience will become much more enjoyable and smooth. Therefore, go for the ones with a return policy and check before locking and checking the amenities by yourself. When you are sure that this generator will serve your purpose using the least amount of electricity, go for it.

Solar Panel:

A nature lover always looks up to ways to preserve nature’s serenity. And a solar panel is undoubtedly the best way to use electricity. With the help of a solar panel, the sunlight turns into electricity. For the night, the energy is stored. However, with the solar panel, it is hard to determine the usage of the appliance. For instance, with a Hookup or a generator, you know how much current it can distribute. But, unfortunately, you cannot calculate with a solar panel. As a result, sometimes one can use up all the current, and at night he would suffer.

Thus, even though solar panels are environmentally friendly and should be everyone’s first choice using it is tricky. If you are not sure that you will use the current calculative manner, this is not ideal.

Leisure Batteries:

These batteries are pretty convenient. However, you always have to make sure that these batteries are always fully charged. That can be trouble if you are out camping for a long time. However, if you compare it with the solar panel, it is easier to use.

As a final comment, tent camping electric hookups are the best solution as an electric current distributor for camping. After that, the generator takes the second position, then comes the leisure battery, and lastly, the solar panel.  The ranking is for convenience, but solar panel is the most environmentally friendly option.

Conclusion:

I hope this piece will help you understand why you need an electrical hookup for camping and how you will buy it. I tried to give you a clear idea about what to look for in an electrical hookup and shared reviews about the best of them. I assume your camping experience will get better after following our tips.

FAQ

What is an electric hookup for campsites?

An electric hookup gives you access to electricity through outlets and plugs while you are out camping. This is great because it allows you to charge your phone, use your laptop, run a fan or blow up air mattresses without worrying about running out of battery power. Lots of campsites have facilities like electric hookups so that you can have internet access while you’re camping.

What does an electric hookup usually cost?

The price varies depending on where you want to go. You can expect to pay between $15 and $35 a night at any campground. Often, there are discounts if you decide to stay several nights.

Or, If power lines are on or near your property line, you will pay an estimated $1,000. Typically, an electrician’s hourly rate is $50 to $100.

If you’re just looking for a place to park your camper overnight, and aren’t worried about running it, you might be able to find a place without electricity available at no charge.

What is the standard voltage of an electrical hookup?

An electrical hookup distributes two hundred and thirty volts. This is a much higher voltage than that of a standard outlet, which has one hundred twenty volts.

It is also different from what you find in your home, which has one hundred ten to one hundred twenty-five volts. The higher voltage makes it possible to run several appliances at once without overloading your circuit or tripping breakers.

It also allows you to use heavy-duty appliances without worrying about blowing fuses or tripping breakers as easily as you would with lower voltages.

Can I use my electric hookup to charge my leisure battery?

Yes, you can, but it is better not to because that might lead to circuit burning. You should use a power inverter instead of directly connecting your batteries. Power inverters are designed to convert DC current into AC current and they are much safer than using a direct connection between your batteries and your electrical hook up.

You can buy them at any camping store or online. When you connect a power inverter between your battery and your electrical hook up, it will charge both of them safely without causing any damage to either one of them.
