How to choose a Fishing Rod?

At the time of selecting a fishing rod, two things should always keep in mind. Those are what type of fish you want to catch and where you want to conduct your fishing.

Broadly, for catching small fishes and big fishes, your rod requirement will not be the same. At the same time, where you want to conduct your fishing like in pond, lake, river, or sea? All of your fishing gear will be according to these two things. Here we are discussing all about a fishing rod.

Fishing-Rod

Materials of a Fishing Rod

Different types of fishing rods are made of different types of raw material. All of them have various characteristics. Wood, graphite, fiberglass, composite, etc. are the common raw materials of a fishing rod.

Materials mostly vary costs, and it’s a big considering thing when you are buying a fishing rod. Some information about the raw materials of fishing rods are given below:

Fiberglass:

Rods made of fiberglass are the least expensive rods in the market. These rods are the least sensitive and powerful at the same time. Rods made of fiberglass usually have medium to low action. They are great for soft illustrations of big baits. These rods generally bend from top to bottom when you are lifting up on weight.

In the case of fiberglass rods, it is not much flexible or not possible to blend well and fast. That is why you will have slow to medium action in these rods. But fiberglass rods are best for catching some fishes like weakfish. You can get a better result using these rods in ice fishing because they are durable enough for pounding. These rods are also advantageous for novice anglers.

Graphite:

Graphite rods are the most expensive rods in the market. At the same time, they are the most powerful and sensitive at the time of weight lifting. Generally, graphite rods are very strong and stiff. You will have the fastest action in these rods. You can catch enough big fish by these rods.

You can conduct your fishing from a long distance, and you can hunt deepwater fishes by these graphite rods. You can recognize very fine and small movements of fishes by these rods.

Composite:

If you go fishing in different places and catch different sized and different kinds of fishes, I will suggest you take a fishing rod made of composite. These rods perform somewhere between fiberglass rods and graphite rods. You can get moderate advantages from this composite rods.

Their cost is generally less than graphite and more than fiberglass rods. These rods combine the benefits of both fiberglass rods and graphite rods. That is why we highly recommend this.

Overall, these materials are the most used in fishing rods now. But you will find homemade bamboo fishing rod, and sometimes you get antique wooden fishing rods.

Rod Length:

The length of a fishing rod is estimated from the tip of the rod to the butt of the handle. Rod length varies from six feet to twelve feet. It has some significance in your fishing. Small-length rods will be able to throw in a short distance.

But if you have a lengthy one, you will be able to throw your bait in long distance. This length is depended on where you want intended to use your rods.

Power of the Rod:

The power of a rod is the strength and the ability of weight lifting of the rod. Every fishing rod has its limit on how much weight it can take up and throw effectively. Generally, the powers of fishing rods are classified into some sections. These are as follows:

Light:

If the power of your fishing rod is light, the action will be swift. By using these kinds of rods, you will be able to catch trout or any other panfish from a small distance.

Medium:

If you want to catch fish from a long distance, you have to use medium or heavy powered rods. By using medium powered rods, you can catch catfish, salmon fish, etc.

Heavy:

If your choice is wider and predatory species of fishes, you have to use heavy power fishing rods. These rods have fast actions, and you will be able to cast in a longer distance. It is perfect for long-distance and saltwater fishes.

Action:

The flexibility of a rod is called action. More broadly, how much your rod will bend when you are putting pressure on the tip. A fast action rod will bend only the top third, and the medium will bend moderate, and a slow action rod will bend similar throughout the length. Fast action rods are much sensitive and applicable in any fishing.

Weight:

Weight is a very important issue for a fishing rod. It is typically measured by how much weight of the lure it can lift and bear or how much the weight of the line of your fishing rod. Generally, how much weight a fishing rod can handle is dependent on its weight.

Sensitivity:

Sensitivity is another important fact for a fishing rod. Because the more sensitive rod, you will use, the more clearly and easily you will recognize the vibration of the hook and movement of the fishes you want to catch.

Handle:

Besides all those things we discussed, the handle is also a significant part of a fishing rod. You need to hold your fishing rod comfortably. A good handle will help you to cast more accurately. That’s why you need a comfortable, lightweight handle with a sufficient grip. Mostly handles are varied according to price.

Fishing Reels:

Fishing reels are used in coiling and storing fishing line, and it helps to cast from a long distance accurately. It is also a considering factor when you are buying a fishing rod.

Guides:

Guides are mostly made of metal frames, which are mostly varied by prices. It will find in your shaft of the fishing rod. The fishing line is penetrated through the guides providing control for the angler.

Types of Fishing Rods:

There are different types of fishing rods you will get in the market. Each one has different characteristics and usage. Some of them are given below:

Types-of-Fishing-Rods

This is the least demanding and cheapest kind of fishing rod and best for the novice. Casting rods are also called spin cast rods in which the reel is mounted over the handle. These rods are reasonable for the lake and other waterways.

Spinning Rods:

Spinning rods are more comfortable for fishing for a long time and used in catching bass, trout, pike, walleye, etc. fishes. It has a good combination of length, action, and price, and these rods are applicable in many kinds of fishing. These rods allow you to hold the rod with your dominant hand, which builds a good control.
