How to Catch a Groundhog with a Milk Jug?

by cody lewis

Are you on your exciting summer vacation? Going to hunt a groundhog but have no rifles with you, or are you out of bullets? Worry not, as there are many other ways to catch a groundhog, such as using a milk jug.

Sounds exciting? Right. This article will show you how to catch groundhogs using a milk jug.

How to Catch a Groundhog with a Milk Jug?

Although their official name is a groundhog, many call them woodchuck or whistle-pigs. They use high-pitched whistling to alert other groundhogs to threats. And for that, they are known as "whistle-pigs."

You can trap a groundhog using a milk jug. Let’s learn how to catch a groundhog using a milk jug without a live trap.

Step 1- Get the milk jug ready

First, get a standard milk jug. The best course of action is to choose a container that isn't entirely transparent but allows you to view it from the outside. The woodchucks will be easier to catch if the milk jug has a deeper tint since they will mistake it for a portion of the hole. Fill the milk jug with water.

Step 2- Locate the hole

You have to properly position the jug after preparing it for the procedure. But first, you need to look for the groundhog's burrow. Since you already know how intelligent groundhogs are, you ought to act similarly.

Check and study the ground. There is another way you can do it. If you don’t want to catch them but put them away from your crops, find out what smell they don’t like. Put that smell in your yard to keep them away.

Step 3- Choose the right position.

You've located the opening and selected the proper woodchuck bait for the live trap. The only thing left is approaching the jug and double-checking that the cork is securely fastened. It's time to tip the jug over down at this point.

This technique was developed to extend the hole. In this case, you must set the jug on the upper side of the hole. Ensure that the jug's mouth is through the hole's mouth.

The groundhog won't be on the ground when it emerges from the hole. It will be placed on the jug. Make sure it is filled with water before placement. The method will not function without water.

Step 4- Wait for the right moment.

After properly positioning the water-filled jug, it's time to catch the groundhog. You have to wait for the right moment. The procedure is lengthy, so don’t expect it to function quickly.

Did you anticipate what would happen when you put the jug there? The water from the jug will reach the groundhog's burrow once it has passed through the openings.

It will begin looking for an explanation as soon as it comes into contact with water or a moist patch of ground or hole. It will spread out of the hole, tracking the water and the hole. So there you have it! You must be prepared for it to appear; believe us, it will! Prepare the jug's cork so you can lock it.

All you have to do to make the cute thing appear is grab hold of the jug, straighten it out, then twist the lid to secure it. When you do it, make sure you move quickly. Be tough when you flip the bottle back after switching it from the flipside position. The small mammal will escape if not.

Step 5- And you are ready!

Make sure you cover the entire jig with a fabric before you travel, taking the groundhog for disposal. The animal won't be afraid to move if you do it this way. All left to do is set the jug free by opening its top while holding it close to the ground.

Final Words

Catching a groundhog might be difficult, but you can make it possible if you execute these things properly. These strategies might not work well if there are numerous groundhogs, and it is difficult to trap each individually. But you can use these strategies if you have the time. It is cheap and simple!

FAQs:

What is irresistible to groundhogs?

The most effective trap to attract woodchucks and groundhogs is cantaloupe. Cut the cantaloupe into 2" cubes and spread the juice to set the trap.

How do you lure a groundhog out of its hole?

Castor oil applied just outside the holes can be an efficient barrier, but only when you are sure they are not around; otherwise, they will remain underground.

How do you catch a smart groundhog?

The most effective groundhog trap is a no-kill trap. You can buy it from nearby home and garden stores. With the help of no-kill traps, you may capture groundhogs humanely and remove them far from your house.

What attracts groundhogs to traps?

Fresh cantaloupe is what they like the most. Also, fresh veggies like broccoli. Peaches also work.
