Disadvantages of Glass Water Bottles over Plastic and Stainless Water Bottles

by cody lewis

Let’s begin with the battle of the bottles. Glass bottles vs. plastic bottles vs. stainless steel bottle; which one is the best for use?

All right. Without any doubt, water bottles ensure you get enough water to stay hydrated and active. To meet individual preferences, water bottles come in a slew of options. For example, stainless steel, glass, plastic, insulated, and collapsible water bottle.

Although glass water bottles are losing repute over plastic and stainless steel bottles for many reasons, it's time to shed light on the disadvantages of glass water bottles.

That's why we are here. We will discuss different aspects of plastic, stainless steel, and glass water bottles. So you can understand what would best suit your needs. Let’s get started.

Know Three Types of Reusable Water Bottles

There was a time when people used to collect water from the stream and hold it in the large jar. As a part of their active lifestyle, they are now habituated to use different types of reusable water bottles.

People can now quickly fill the bottle from the water-cooler or the kitchen sink and take along wherever needed. Let’s know more about three mostly used water bottles in the market.

Plastic Water Bottles

While talking about reusable water bottles, plastic water bottles come first in our minds. Plastic water bottles are more handy and accessible nowadays. Not like before, today's plastic water bottles are made of phthalates, PVC, BPA-free materials.

Plastic water bottles are suitable for everyday use. These bottles come in a variety of sizes, colors, and shapes. Also, plastic water bottles are dishwasher-safe, which makes it easy to use.

Stainless Steel Water Bottles

Stainless steel bottles are made from culinary-grade and lead-free steel material. Some bottles are crafted from grade-304 or 18/8 materials. These bottles are mostly durable and corrosion-resistant. It does not leach chemicals even when exposed to sun or heat.

These bottles are 100% recyclable and can endure severe use. The best part is, due to temperature control and vacuum-insulation, the water stays cold for a long time. Modern, stylish folks incline toward stainless steel due to its eye-opening colors and styles. If you are habituated to icy cold drinks, go with stainless steel.

Glass Water Bottles

Glass bottles are another popular bottle category. These bottles are crafted from naturally rich materials like limestone, sand, and soda ash. It keeps the water and other liquids without any absorbing tastes and odors. That's because glass is non-absorptive.

These bottles can be recycled endlessly without affecting the quality. In fact, most of today’s glass bottles are recycled from used glass bottles. Glass water bottles are easier to clean and remain clear even after hundreds of washings. But, these bottles have a lot of disadvantages which we'll discuss below.

The Disadvantages of Glass Water Bottles over Plastic and Stainless Steel Bottles

Let’s start differently and talk about the disadvantages of glass-made water bottles. Although glass water bottles are made from natural, chemical-free materials, some people don't find it useful. Here is why;

Breakable

The biggest disadvantage of glass water bottles is its fragility. Like other glass kitchen wares, it tends to be fragile. Some glass bottles are thin and break easily. Even aftercare, most thick glass bottles can break anytime.

Due to its fragile nature, most gyms, athletic facilities, hiking trails, etc. confines the use of glass bottles. Albeit there are some glass water bottles which has plastic shell over the glass. If it breaks accidentally, the glass will remain inside the shell.

Heavy to Carry

Most people don't like using glass water bottles because these are quite heavy. Well, that’s true. To make the bottle more durable, manufacturers make the design thick and layered.

Consequently, the bottle becomes quite heavy, which limits its usability. While you go for outing or regular works, you possibly look for what is lightweight. It is annoying to carry a heavy bottle when you are on the go.

Since the glass bottles are breakable, these are not safe for kid's use. Glass water bottles cannot withstand insensible use. Which is why it is better to keep the glass bottles away from children.

Not Well-Insulated

One more reason people avoid using glass bottles is, these bottles are not well-insulated. These are not protected by any interposing materials which inhibit the loss of heat.

When you keep warm or cold water inside the bottle, it returns to its normal temperature. You cannot carry cold water on a long sunny day, even only half an hour. Also, it doesn’t prevent the passes of electricity. That’s why most water bottles are not safe to use in the oven.

Get Scratched and Faded Easily

Like the nature of glass, these bottles become fade after a few days of use. It also gets faded when you use these bottles to keep any juices, cold drinks, alcohols, etc. Moreover, glass bottles get scratched when it comes in touch with other stuff.

Heats Up Easily

Glass water bottles tend to heat up quickly if you keep warm water. It somehow related to not being appropriately insulated. You cannot use glass bottles for carrying hot water or other beverage in your outing trips.

Why Should You Use Stainless Steel Bottle over Glass bottles?

People are now started to expect more from stainless steel water bottles. Stainless steel bottles prove to be handy than glass water bottles. In fact, active and adventurous people are switching towards stainless steel bottles.

So, are you being late in this trend? If yes, you should switch to stainless steel bottles. Still not convinced? Here is why you should use stainless steel bottles instead of glass bottles.

Last but not least, glass water bottles come at a high price. Possibly because of its manufacturing and handling costs. Not everyone can afford glass water bottles due to its high price.

Durable

One of the first reasons people are inclining toward stainless steel bottles is its durability. These bottles can even last for about 12 years and more. Stainless steel can withstand high impact.

It has chromium inside, which heal any minor damage, including scratches. You can repair the bottle instead of throwing it away. In a word, a stainless steel bottle lasts for many years as long as oxygen is not present.

Safe for Health

Unlike plastic bottles, stainless steel bottle doesn't contain phthalates, BPA, or other chemicals. Not only kids but these bottles are also safe for pregnant women. Also, stainless steel is entirely toxin-free and prevents any bacteria growth, which keeps the water safe.

Environment-Friendly

If we compare, stainless steel bottles are more environment-friendly than glass and plastic bottles. Where about 80% of plastic bottles are not recyclable, stainless steel bottles can be recycled even after longer use.

Convenience

With a stainless steel bottle in hand, there is no fear of breakage and scratches. It makes the bottle easy to use and clean. Stainless steel bottles are also dishwasher-safe.

You can simply keep the bottle at the top rack of your dishwasher. Thus, it saves a lot of time. While glass bottles are way harder to clean as they are fragile.

Retains Temperature

Unlike glass water bottles, stainless steel water bottles can maintain temperature for long. If you pour hot water inside, it keeps the water warm for about at max 12 hours. You can carry hot or lukewarm water on the go.

Why Should You Use Plastic Bottle over Glass Water Bottles?

There are lots of disagreements when it comes to plastic water bottles. Still, plastic bottles are more popular nowadays. People use these bottles everyday use for many reasons. Let’s talk about it:

Lightweight

First and foremost, plastic bottles are lightweight than any glass water bottles. You can easily carry a bottle while going for the gym, walking, cycling, hiking, trailing, etc. Due to less weight, it becomes the first choice for the move.

Affordable

Possibly because of the low manufacturing cost, plastic water bottles come at a low price. Which is why everyone can afford to buy plastic bottles.

Variety of Choices

Plastic bottles become a top choice among young people. That's because it comes in a variety of sizes, colors, and shapes. Also, some plastic bottles allow you to customize any message or logo over the bottles.

Then there come some plastic bottles, which come with different lids. The lids may include straw, twist, and push top options. In a word, when you choose to use a plastic bottle, you have a lot of options.

Easy to Clean

Finally, plastic water bottles are way easier to wash. You can even clean it with any dishwashing liquids and warm water. Even most bottles are dishwasher-safe, which you can clean without any effort.

The Bottom Line

You know what, people are now confused about the reusable water bottles. They just don’t understand which water bottle is suitable for them. Considering the safety, ease of use, etc. glass water bottles seem to be on the low side.

Meanwhile, you know the disadvantages of glass water bottles, we should leave the decision to you. We hope our guideline helps you know what suits you.

Note that choosing a water bottle is a step to live a healthier life!
