How to Install Pull-Up Bars without Doorframe

How to Install Pull-Up Bars without Doorframe

by cody lewis

So, maybe you have bought doorway pull-up bars and ready to install it. Wait what! Your door hasn’t any door frame, or your door trim is so slim for the pull-up bar hook? Now perhaps you are blaming yourself that you should have checked this before buying.

Okay, stops blaming yourself. Just like everything, it has an alternative method. And here, you will get to know how to install a pull-up bar without door frame.

How to Install Pull-Up Bars Without Doorframe?

Using the Pull-up bar is a great way to progress health at home, and it is quite easy to use. But at first, you have to install a pull-up bar at your home. Most people install it on their doors, and these pull-up bars are known as doorway pull-up bars.

We will provide you three solutions which will assist you in fixing your pull-up bar on the door, even if your door doesn’t have any frames. You can choose your preferred one among them.

A. Bracket Mount Method

In this method, two or more right angles and metal brackets are used for installing the pull-up bar. These brackets work as a hook for your pull-up bar to rest on.

Be careful when drilling into your wall and make sure that you are drilling into the header of your doorway. Otherwise, there will be the possibility of screws to tear out.

Let’s have a look at what material are needed for this method-

  • Weight-bearing metal brackets ( 2 or 3)
  • Weight-bearing wall-screws ( 4 is okay)
  • 4 washers to accompany screws ( though it is optional)

Now we will describe the procedure of this method step by step.

Step 1- Taking Measurements

Simply hold your pull-up bar on the doorway, just like you would hold it for mounting usually. Locate the spot with a pencil mark where you want to locate your pull-up bar. This pencil mark will assist you in the upcoming process.

Step 2- Mount Your Bracket

Make sure that your brackets have fulfilled these specific requirements-

  • Must be weight-bearing
  • Must have holes studded along with them
  • Holes diameters must firmly fit the screws

Now line your first brackets up with one of the markings on the wall, and don’t forget to notice that the bracket is in L shape or not. It must be in L shape. Then place one screw into one hole on the outer border of the bracket and get ready to drill it.

Now,  drill the bolt into the wall until it flushes against the wall. Repeat the same procedure for the other brackets.

Step 3- Test your Bracket

On the installed mount, hook up your pull-up bar. Just for checking whether your pull-up is stable or not hang up on that for a bit.

If you don’t feel secure or if the brackets begin to detach from the wall, you need to tighten your bolt. For extra security, you can drill some more screws into your brackets, or you can use screws with washers.

B. Wood Block Mount Method

For hanging pull-up bar hook on the doorway, this method uses a woodblock as makeshift door trim. Some people don’t prefer to drill on the wall, and this method is perfect for them. As in this method, you don’t need to dig on your wall for installing a pull-up bar.

With the help of a woodblock and mounting tape, you can install the pull-up bar. Nevertheless, drilling your block into the wall is suggested for a more secure installation.

Following is the list of the needed materials for this method-

  • Approximately one-inch thick wood board (1)
  • Mounting tape
  • Soap and a washcloth

Step 1- Wood Cutting

The ideal wood board for his approach will be flat, rectangular-shaped, about one inch thick, and almost three inches tall. For instance- you need a piece of wood like a piece of the door trim.

One piece of disconnected door trim can be used here. And if you don’t have any available detached door trim, you can use clapboards as well.

So, if you haven’t a piece of wood in the right dimensions, cut it. Make sure that the part of the wood fits the length of your hook on your pull-up bar.

Step 2- Cleaning the Wall

So, now you should clean the wall on top of the door. Though it is optional, we strongly suggest you follow this. It is because if you provide a clean surface for mounting tape, it will ensure that your makeshift mount won’t plunge.

Use soap and washcloth for simply wiping the above part of the doorway and dry the spot before moving to the next step.

Step 3- Mount the Board

On the side border of your board, which will be mounted to the wall, there apply mounting tape. Besides, you can also apply mounting tape on the midsection of the board for more security.

Now line up your board horizontally to the right place on the wall. Push your board on the wall and put constant pressure on the board for almost 1 minute or more for the most durable adhesion.

Make sure you are using extra-strong mounting tape. If you use wrong mounting tape, it can pull off at the time of working out. And our suggestion is to drill your block into the wall for more security.

Step 4- Test Your Pull-Up Bar

After completing the installation process, hook up your pull-up bar. And always remember to hang on it a bit for checking the stability before starting the workout.

C. Wall Hook Method

In alternate of the door trim, this method uses two wall hooks to support your pull up bar. This method is quite similar to the bracket mount method.

Here, again be careful at the time of drilling that you are drilling into the cripple studs or header of your doorway. We are giving some tips on how you can find a wall stud-

  • By using a stud finder
  • Studs are sometimes situated beside electrical outlets and light switches. You can find studs there
  • Check by sound
  • By using flashlight
  • By using a wire stud finder

Now let’s have a look what materials are needed for this method-

  • Utility wall hooks (2)
  • Weight-bearing wall screws

Step 1- Mount your Hooks

Before mounting wall hooks, make sure that those can give support to your body. The majority of the wall hooks that drill into the wall can support bodyweight but double-check for becoming surer.

Some adhesive wall hooks are available at the market. Trust us, it will  perform well. But our suggestion is to use drilling wall hooks because they are secured than that adhesive one as those could perhaps fall off.

At first, make sure that you have lined up two hooks in the right spots of your wall. The height should be adequate so that your pull-up bars fasten suitably on the wall. You can use a pencil for marking the spot.

So, now you have lined up your hooks and then drill the hooks into the wall.

Step 2- trial your Hooks

It is always one crucial step to check the installed pull-up bars before starting working out. So, simply hang on your hook mount and check whether your hooks are fully supportive or not.

Final Words

So, now you know how to install pull- up bars even if your door doesn’t have a door frame.  In this writing, we have tried to provide the step by step process of how to install pull-up bars without door frame in three different methods.

These methods are proven to be secured and handy. You can choose any of them without hesitation. If you install pull-up bars at your door, you will be able to work out at your home. It will, at the same time, save your time and will assist you in improving your health.
